The remaining forms for Outdoor School went home and students are asked to come with a parent or legal guardian to our information meeting on March 8th at 6 pm. This meeting will take place in the gym and give students an idea of what to expect while they are at Outdoor School. A parent or guardian must attend this meeting in order for their child to attend the Outdoor School program. If you are unable to attend the meeting please notify your student's teacher as soon as possible so that a make up time can be arranged. All other forms and the $20 fee is due by March 20th. We hope to see you there.
We have started a book study in January on "The Lemonade War." Students have been discussing the theme of internal and external conflict that the characters in the book are facing. We are also learning about different forms of figurative language in our book. So far we have learned about similes, metaphors, idioms and personifications.
We have started our new unit on Chemistry in Science and students have been exploring mixtures. They are sharing different mixtures that they have made or seen and beginning to think of different ways they could separate those mixtures.
We completed our first experiment in this unit by mixing together water, lemon juice and sugar. We observed the different stages of this experiment and watched as the ingredients came together to form a solution. I encourage you to ask your child what they noticed when they looked, smelled and tasted throughout the different stages. They can also tell you how we decided we would move forward with separating the water from our mixture and why we thought it would work. We have been working had on adding and subtracting in math. Students have been developing their understanding of regrouping and learning new strategies to support them in solving word problems. One of the ways students have thought about regrouping is how we might need to make change when we are dealing with money. We are also continuing to look at different strategies like drawing pictures and organizing information in a chart when attempting to solve problems that require more than one step. Students are strongly encouraged to talk through their thinking to help them remember the strategies they have learned.
The SUTP fundraiser has started at Valley View and is taking place until September 30th.
We are having our School BBQ/Meet the Teacher Interviews on September 14 from 3:30-7:00. Please feel free to visit the classroom from 3:30-4:30 to see your child's class and to meet the teacher. Dinner will be served from 4:30-5:30 where they will have burgers and juice boxes. You can also visit your child's classroom between 5:30 and 7:00 once you have had a chance to eat. I look forward to meeting you on Thursday. The Grade 5 students are excited to begin their patroller training for the new school year. Those who are interested have taken home forms for the parents to sign. It is important that those forms are returned no later than September 1 as our trainer is coming to work with the students on September 7th. If you child wants to participate in patrollers they will need to be at school at 7:45 am if they have a morning shift and would have to stay after school until 2:45 pm if they have an afternoon shift.
Students are settling into their new classroom at Valley View School. They are beginning their curriculum as they get to meet their fellow classmates. We will begin with our unit on numbers to one million in Math. Students should be on the lookout for larger numbers as the practice saying them out loud. We are beginning our unit on Weather in Science and are starting to look at Canadian Geography in Social Studies. Please visit this blog throughout the year to see what the Grade 5 class is up to.
